The King, Princess, Prince and the Bull.

Postby Caligo » Sat Aug 20, 2011 11:45 am

Silent Hill puzzle dilemma that was very interesting. Love to hear what others would choose. It goes like this.

Let me introduce some friends of mine. The great King Herald. His daughter the chaste Princess Celestince. A Prince named Wilhelm, and a bull… he has no name.

Prince Wilhelm is passionately in love with Celestine. But she does not love with him. One day, Wilhelm comes to the King and asks for Celestine’s hand in marriage. Celestine begs her father not to marry her to Wilhelm, but the King ignores her pleas. Royal protocol means he must say yes to the match.

They are married and Wilhelm takes Celestine back with him to his kingdom. That night, he attempts to consummate the marriage, but the distraught Celestine flees. She runs from the safety of the castle and across a field, ignoring the sign which warns of danger. In that field is a bull, who seeing the girl, charges her. She falls under his hooves and is killed instantly.
So… Who is most guilty of Celestines death. Who in order was most responsible?
1 being most culpable to 4 being the least responsible.

I listed
1. The King (Though Im starting to think the Princess for ignoring the warning)
2. The Prince ( He's the one who tried to force it... or did he? The story doesnt say lol )
3. The Princess (Read above)
4. The bull (Though he is the one who killed her he is a creature who attacks out of instinct)

Lemme know what you would choose, whether you have or havent played the game.

*Theres no wrong answers here~ Just differet opinions.

I would say the prince
because my understanding of this puzzle is:
The king had to say yes (he could of said no I guess...but...)
the princess didn't love the prince (it's not certain if he knew this or not)
By asking the king for her hand, he was basically forcing her into the marriage (especially if he knew that the king had to say yes)
He tried to consummate the marriage aswell (could of tried to rape her for all we know)
which forced the princess to run, and then get mowed down by a bull.

Case closed my dear Watson. >.>

Given my work, I tend to look at things like this with an eye that attempts to identify what'd work in court.

The one responsible for her death is the Bull, all the way. It acted out of instinct, but instinctive reactions don't negate responsibility for death, or make it so the death wasn't the result of their direct action.

Neither the King nor the Prince had any mens rea for wanting her to die, or any intention that she would die. There was no malice or even action that directly led to her death. The Princess, although unhappy, wasn't particularly suicidal. Even if she was, she hadn't intended that the Bull kill her at that point.

So...the blame rests solely with the Bull.

That all said, I wouldn't particularly like to be involved with the Inquest into her death but it wasn't a murder or even a manslaughter. It was just an unfortunate happenstance that looks bad due to circumstance.

So:

Bull,
Prince
King
Princess.

If I had to sort in order, although I would list the latter three as completely blameless to be truthful.

I basically saw it as a cause and effect xD the prince was the cause and the death was the effect. If the prince hadn't of asked for her hand, she wouldn't of been killed by the bull (so many temporal mind benders could come out of this one!).

but you're right though, you can't blame any of them since they didnt try to kill her or cause an accidental death.

Haha, interesting take on that Ash. all very logical and law minded. And I guess it's more conclusive even with the circumstances that are left to our minds to figure out. Though I'm surprised you put Princess last? Since if I lets say, touched a wire despite the warning not too, I would be at blame yes? Or if I went into a lions den despite the signs. Unless she couldnt read?

Hmm, I hadn't read that sentence XD In that case I'd place the Princess second as she was warned of the hazard of the bull. She wasn't trying to get herself killed but her ignoring the sign was clearly a contributory factor.

Also typically even illiterates tend to be able to identify a warning sign (even one which wasn't a pictorial sign) either by colour or by the fact they're generally written in BIG BOLD SHOUTY TEXT.

Next time you see a BEWARE OF THE DOG sign, compare it to a sign saying FRESH EGGS SOLD HERE. :P
